Alice In Chains:
Alice in Chains emerged as the originators of Grunge Rock with metal records that defined the '90s. Multi-Platinum records, worldwide tours, and immense success shortly ensued. With success, came tragedy and the band suffered through the loss of their lead singer Layne Staley in 2002 and disbanded. After the hiatus, the band has subsequently regrouped, released new material, and resumed touring. Alice in Chains tour dates are currently scheduled nationally throughout 2011.
The group formed in 1986 with Layne Staley at the helms; Jerry Cantrell joined soon after, as did Nick Pollock on guitar, Johnny Bacolas on bass and James Bergostrom on drums. The group gained a following in the Pacific Northwest and cut a demo in 1988. They were picked up by Columbia Records in 1989 and released their debut EP We Die Young. An instant hit, the EP featured the title-track which rushed up the Modern Rock Songs survey on Billboard. It immediately ushered in the Grunge Era and the band released their debut LP off the success. Facelift was released in 1990 and was certified Gold by years-end. The album was praised by critics for its innovative new direction in rock music. Alice in Chains tour dates were booked on the opening stage for acts such as Iggy Pop, Van Halen, and Poison. They topped off all of the success and mainstream attention with a Grammy Award nomination for Best Hard Performance at the 1992 ceremony.
After their extensive tour the band went into the studio intending to record another LP. Instead, they recorded a five-song acoustic EP entitled Sap. It was released in 1992 alongside Nirvana's iconic Nevermind album, both albums signalled the nascent of the new genre. They followed up with a sincere sophomore set Dirt which chronicled some of the band members' struggle with addiction. Released in 1992 the album became their biggest seller to-date and was certified four times platinum. The Alice in Chains concert schedule included a headlining stint on Lollapalooza in 1993.
The band returned with another acoustic EP Jar of Flies which was released in 1994. The critically acclaimed album was hailed by Rolling Stone magazine who labeled the disc as "darkly gorgeous". The album's subject matter mirrored the life of lead singer Staley who soon entered rehab for his heroin addiction. His stint there would not cure him and the band had to pull out on their 1994 tour with Metallica. The band went on a self-imposed hiatus pending a full recovery for Staley.
The original line-up, including Staley, re-teamed in 1995 and they recorded new material. The resulting product was the self-titled third album which became their first #1 album on the Billboard 200 when it debuted in 1995. Alice in Chains booked a set with MTV's "Unplugged" series and cut an acoustic album from the performance. The album was released in 1996 and peaked at #3. Alice in Chains tour dates were once again scheduled on the Lollapalooza tour and sadly, their last performance in Kansas City would be the final to feature Staley as a member. The band went on an indefinite hiatus in 1996 to pursue individual side projects. Cantrell made some noise with a solo album in 1998 and the band released their Greatest Hit in 2001. Tragically in 2002, Staley was found dead in his house due to an overdose of heroin and cocaine.
The band mourned the loss of their original member; Jerry Cantrell dedicated his second solo album to the fallen Staley. They regrouped in 2005 to perform a benefit concert in Seattle and they also booked an intimate club tour in Europe. The band reunited to record their first album in fourteen years and released Black Gives Away to Blue in 2009. Their comeback album was a home-run. It was certified gold and featured two #1 singles on the Modern Rock chart, their first since 1994. The band suffered through an additional tragedy with the loss of former bassist Mike Starr who also lost a battle with drug addiction in 2011.
Alice in Chains were the forefathers of the short-lived Grunge Era, they celebrated success and suffered through tragic losses. They encountered several setbacks due to addiction, but always returned to each other because of their chemistry for creating awesome music.
